What purpose does deer farming have in Tasmania?
I’m quite interested in deer/agriculture, and all that jazz, but I was just wondering what you actually DO with deer.
I am assuming it’s mostly for meat/slaughter, etc., but do you also breed them for meat?
Mind you, I’m mostly interested in deer farming in Australia/Tasmania, but I suppose it’s all the same at the end of the day, isn’t it?
And also, are the smaller breeds of deer (Hog deer, Chital/Indian Spotted deer) easier to manage? Since I’m thinking in the way of horses, and, obviously, Shetlands (for example) are easier to manage than, say, Shires, simply because of the size. Is this relevant in deer?
Thank you very much in advance!
Historically, the first record of deer consigned to Tasmania was chital deer in 1829, but they failed to establish. Fallow deer were first imported in 1836.
Today, only fallow deer occur in Tasmania. It is estimated that there are 30,000 animals roughly bounded by a line from Launceston to Derwent Bridge to Pontville to the east-coast to St. Helens and back to Launceston.
Fallow deer are a partly protected species under the Wildlife Regulations 1999. Annual seasons are proclaimed for the taking of male deer and antlerless deer. Outside of the seasons, deer may be taken under Crop Protection Permits (available by contacting the Game Management Services Unit and the Wildlife Conservation Branch) issued to landowners who are suffering browsing damage from deer.
